Creating a communication-friendly classroom doesnt require big budgets or fancy equipment. In fact, its the little things that make the biggest difference.

Here are simple strategies you can use today:

  • Use a visual timetable to help children understand the days structure.
  • Break instructions into small, clear steps.
  • Use pictures, symbols, and gestures to support spoken language.
  • Give children time to think and respond them. Don't rush them!
  • Pair talk: let children practise speaking in pairs before answering questions.
  • Keep background noise to a minimum so children can focus on your words.
  • Praise effort when children try to communicateeven if its not perfect.

Why does this matter?

Because many children with speech, language, or communication needs (SLCN) can't always let you know about what they are experiencing. A busy classroom can be overwhelming, especially when they can't understand the language being used.

By creating a communication-friendly space, you give those children the chance to participate fully. You help them feel safe, confident, and capable.

And best of all, what works for children with SLCN benefits every pupil. Clear language, visual support, and a calm environment help everyone learn better.
